I have sanded, sanded, and sanded, applied stain and now am ready for the polyeuethane… anyone know a better way to put it on than with a 3 inch paint brush?

I just housebroke two puppies, so I can finally rip up those smelly rugs and begin to refinish my hardwood floors. My husband and I ripped up the carpet last night and took the tack strip off as well as all of the staples. I just banged down all of the nails that were coming up. Now, I know I’m supposed to sand the floor down, but I honestly don’t know how. My hubby left me the electric sander and sandpaper which I figured out how to put together – but have no idea how to use it. I know you have to turn it on, that parts obvious, but I don’t know how much pressure to apply with the sander. There are stains of paint and who knows what to sand out. Also, there is some buckling in some spots from water damage. Can that be sanded down and finished like the rest of the floor, or do those planks have to be replaced? I’m a novice, so any advice would be helpful – any advice!! Thanks so much.

How to refinish a hardwood floor

We moved into a (potentially) beautiful Harlem brownstone last fall. Unfortunately, the last time the apartment was “renovated”, the contractors were hired on the cheap. We consequently have a very nice hardwood floor that was waxed and sealed while dirty. Which means it has about ten years of dirt between the blanks and and least two weeks of human and cat hair sealed under the wax. Despite our good intentions, unfortunately, neither of us have any experience with stripping, refinishing, or waxing a hardwood floor. So, basically, how do two absolute beginners approach the stripping, cleaning, (possible) refinishing, and sealing/waxing of a hardwood floor?

Refinishing a hardwood floor?

One of the previous owners of our house glued their foam carpet pad to beautiful hardwood floors. Now I’m trying to get all that glue and a thin layer of black foam off. Does anyone know an efficient way to do this?

Took up the carpeting in my bedroom, floor looks great except for several scratches in the wood. These are 1/16″ or smaller you can feel it with your finger nail and see them throughout the room. The floor is hardwood with a varnish, possibly a polyurethane varnish, I am not sure.

We recently had our hardwood floors refinished by a friend of a friend who said he knew what he was doing. The floor has dents/waves in it and the finish is not smooth but has small pimply bumps on it. Is there any way to fix this without refinishing the floor entirely? We haven’t paid this “friend” yet – what should we do?
The dents/waves were not in the floor before it was sanded. Could the sander have caused them? Is there a way to fix without resanding all of the newly applied stain and polyurethane?
