I want to refinish my countertop with the glass look that oil based poly offers. I know many people have done this but does anyone know for sure if oil based is safe to be around food? We will not cut on our counters or use them for major food contact, but I dont want to worry. Suggestions on best brand of poly for this project please!! Thanks!!

Any finish you buy is safe for food contact once it is fully cured. Basically when you can’t smell it anymore. No finish has been approved by the FDA so even if they say they are salad bowl or something.

I cannot comment on what others say about poly based finishes but I can say what works for me:
It is a product called Salad Bowl Finish. I have used it on my oak butcher block counter tops since the day they were installed in 1986.
This product provides a great shine and the label states it is food safe. Now, this product can very well be the same poly as other products out there, but I felt better knowing it is safe for areas where food is prepared. I do not cut on my counter tops, either. Before my children knew better, I imposed a $5.00 fine if a knife blade hit my counter top.
They made that mistake only once!!!!!!!
