How can I get it out and what can I expect to pay for such a thing?

I moved into a house where the previous owner had five cocker spaniels and they left all kinds of black spots on the hardwood floors. We had to take out the saturated carpets and vinyl and that’s when we discovered the damage.

I read about this tip where you slather a very thick layer of Miracle Whip on top of the spot and cover it with a laundry basket or box and let it set up for a few days. Supposedly the black stuff gets lifted off when you wash off the spread.

I tried it on a huge spot in the dining room but the damage was so deep that it didn’t work very well. I did notice that it lightened the stain a bit though. Plus I’d used painter’s tape to secure the box and it lifted the varnish off the floor, so I actually caused more damage. This stain was probably at least five years old by the time I treated it, and you may have better luck on a fresh one.

If that doesn’t work, then I’m sorry to say that sanding probably wouldn’t work either, because the stain will be too far down into the wood. You’d have to have that section replaced by a professional so they can match it up.

We’re going to paint a layer or two of Kilz primer-sealer over the spots and then install wall-to-wall carpet or laminate flooring.

Too many spots and too much trouble. Sheesh!

    I wish you luck!

To be honest, if you have real hardwood, not laminate. Then you are in deep trouble. If they floor has been well taken care of and has been sealed and waxed you could try sanding it and re-finishing it, however you can’t do that one spot because it wont match the rest of the room. If you sand the floor, to get the sealant and was off, and the stain is still there then you would have to hire someone to replace that section of floor, which would be expensive. My advice would be to hire someone to sand it down and if it looks bad then by laminate hardwood which looks just like real hardwood but wont stain and require little, if any maintenance, this will also be expensive, but you wouldn’t have to worry about doing it again in a couple of years when another stain shows up.

We ran into this problem years ago, not only were we unable to get rid of the stain but when we sanded it the smell was horrible. We ended up cutting out the bad areas and replacing them then sanding and restaining the entire floor.
    Good luck

Put down a mixture of oxaclic acid and water. That will get the stain out. You can get it at a marine hardware store. Works great on teak, oak and mahogany.

you’ll most likely have to replace the carpet and possibly the floor below…it is probably mildewed…that’s why it’s black…phew, huh!
