Old hardwood floor about 90 years old, has been under carpet for last 30 years. The flooring has paint splatters and a couple dings. I’m not sure if I should spend the time, money and energy to sand it down, stain it, and reseal it, or just try to clean the paint splatters off.

I would start by going at the paint spatters. If it looks good when you are done, leave it at that, but if you still want it to look better, then go for the refinishing.

If the wood is in good condition I would sand it down and refinish it, the sealers we have today are better than they used 90 years ago. It isn’t that hard to rent a sander and take the old finish off however it is dusty, but the end results will definitely be worth the effort.

You should definitely refinish the floors. They bring a great amount of equity to the home. Also you will not believe the brilliance, and elegance it will bring to your home environment.

I agree with DesignDiva. Nothing looks better than wood floors especially the older wood floors. I poly’d mine with a clear coat but mine are only 30+ years old. I did three bedrooms. It is a hard job but well worth it (especially now that it’s done). I scraped my floors with a paint scraper (high quality). For me it was better than dealing with the dust and scraped off quite nicely.

Refinishing the floor would be a BIG job. I would try to get rid of the paint spatters and clean it. I have a kit that my mom got at WalMart or Home Depot. It comes with the handle, cleaning pads and cleaner. After this dries, you apply the liquid wax. It will make your floors look GREAT!
