I uncovered hardwood floors in my house that had 2 layers of plywood and 5 layers of tar paper to vinyl tile. A total of 7/8 inch thick. at this point they are covered in sheet rock mud, sand, adhesive in some areas and dirt.I need to clean this off before refinishing the floors what is the best way?

You can use good old water and vinegar. If you want to buy something I would recommend Bona cleaner(You can get it at Lowes). It’s a Swedish stuff from the company that specializes in wood flooring industry. They produce good poly, sanders, sandpaper also. The bottom line is: they know what they’re doing.

You can try mineral spirits.I would not bother cleaning the brushes, though. If you want to use them later with the oil-based poly, you should put the brushes inside the plastic bag, wrap it tight and place the bag into the cold place(freezer would be a perfect spot).Do not put the back inside the fridge: all your food will smell like poly…
